Have You Been Diagnosed With Irritable Bowel Syndrome? You Could Be Having Immune Reactions To Food!

January 31, 2011 · Filed Under Irritable Bowel Syndrome · Comment

I was misdiagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome for 5 years prior to my diagnosis with celiac disease. Unfortunately, I have talked to many other people who have been misdiagnosed with this syndrome as well. Some individuals really had a gluten intolerance (celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, or non-celiac gluten intolerance), some had food allergies (IgA, IgG, and IgE antibody mediated), and others appeared to find relief on a paleolithic diet.

Fact Or Fiction?: Celiac Patients Tolerate Hydrolyzed Wheat

January 26, 2011 · Filed Under Hydrolyzed Wheat · 7 Comments

Researchers are attempting to modify grains with the hope that it will eliminate immune reactions to the gluten within it. The belief is that a new modified product, such as hydrolyzed wheat, might give people who are diagnosed with a gluten intolerance, another option for food. A switch to a hydrolyzed wheat diet for others might also help to decrease the risk of developing a gluten intolerance. This research sounds promising and the end product may be beneficial.

Canadian Proposed Food Allergen/Gluten Labeling Regulations In Jeopardy

January 25, 2011 · Filed Under Food Allergen/Gluten Labeling · Comment

This morning, I received an e-mail from Shelley Case who is on the medical advisory board for the Celiac Disease Foundation, the Gluten Intolerance Group, and the Canadian Celiac Association. Shelley is also the author of “Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide”.

Today’s e-mail is about a very important concern that could affect the health of 2.8 million Canadians with food allergies and gluten intolerance. For over 10 years, the Canadian Celiac Association and allergy associations have been advocating for better labeling laws so that Canadians can rightfully see the food allergens that may be in their foods. Progress was occurring, but now the proposed food allergen/gluten labeling regulations are in jeopardy. Please read Shelley’s e-mail below along with the links for more details. It is very important to support this movement. Without change, the health of many Canadians could be negatively impacted.

Lactose Intolerance Can Be A Symptom Of Gluten Intolerance

January 22, 2011 · Filed Under Lactose Intolerance · 9 Comments

Many people are told that they have a lactose intolerance and are never investigated further to find the cause. Usually, only a lactose-free diet is recommended. I think we (doctors, nurses) need to dig a little deeper. Gluten could be the trigger and a gluten-free diet could be the real solution. For many, a lactose intolerance may actually disappear once an individual is consuming a gluten-free diet.
